Isaacs Jogues

Isaac Jogues (January 10, 1607-October 18, 1646) was a Jesuit misionary in North America. Born in Orleans, France Jogues entered the Society of Jesus in 1624. In 1642 he was sent to New France to proselytize to the First Nations. He was captured by the Iroquois[[, then at war with the French, but [[Dutch merchants allowed him to escape back to France. He returned to North America, however, and on a peace mission to the Iroquois was killed in 1646. He is regarded as a martyr by the Catholic Church and in 1930 Jogues and seven other martyred missionaries were canonized.
