Inverness is a town located in Marin County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,421.


Inverness is located at 38°5'35" North, 122°50'54" West (38.092984, -122.848432)1. Lying on the western shore of Tomales Bay on the Point Reyes peninsula, it provides services to visitors to the Point Reyes National Seashore.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 16.6 km² (6.4 mi²). 15.5 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.86% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,421 people, 707 households, and 364 families residing in the town. The population density is 91.9/km² (237.9/mi²). There are 999 housing units at an average density of 64.6/km² (167.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.58% White, 0.42% African American, 0.42% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 5.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 707 households out of which 16.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.9% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.4% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.98 and the average family size is 2.56.

In the town the population is spread out with 14.5% under the age of 18, 2.7% from 18 to 24, 20.3% from 25 to 44, 41.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 51 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,500, and the median income for a family is $78,398. Males have a median income of $42,448 versus $37,321 for females. The per capita income for the town is $37,340. 10.6% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line.
