Hydrophobic

Hydrophobic species, or hydrophobes, tend to be electrically neutral and nonpolar, and thus preferring other neutral and nonpolar solvents or molecular environments. Hydrophobic is often used interchangeably with "oily" or "lipophilic".

Examples of hydrophobic molecules include the alkanes.

Compare: hydrophilic, hydrophobia.
