census of 2000, there are 14,309 people, 5,722 households, and 3,782 families residing in the town. The population density is 637.2/km² (1,650.3/mi²). There are 5,947 housing units at an average density of 264.8/km² (685.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.68% White, 5.98% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.86% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,722 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.0% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% are non-families. 30.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.80. In the town the population is spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 77.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $42,264, and the median income for a family is $50,000. Males have a median income of $36,326 versus $25,599 for females.
