Hempstead is a city located in Waller County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,691. It is the county seat of Waller County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 4,691 people, 1,663 households, and 1,124 families residing in the city. The population density is 364.4/km² (943.8/mi²). There are 1,848 housing units at an average density of 143.6/km² (371.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 39.86% White, 43.44% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 14.65% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 24.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,663 households out of which 34.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% are married couples living together, 20.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.35. In the city the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,095, and the median income for a family is $29,744. Males have a median income of $26,673 versus $20,938 for females.
