census of 2000, there are 1,415 people, 537 households, and 374 families residing in the city. The population density is 170.7/km² (441.8/mi²). There are 598 housing units at an average density of 72.2/km² (186.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 50.39% White, 48.06% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 537 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 21.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.19. In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.
