Harmonized sales tax

A harmonized sales tax (HST) combines all taxes on goods and services into a single tax. This is a useful revenue tool for a government. In Ontario, Canada's case, some goods are not taxed with both the GST and PST. However, an HST cannot make such a separation and those goods will be taxed at the standard HST rate. This leads to higher revenues for the government.
