\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,544 km² (596 mi²). 1,497 km² (578 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.09% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 25,578 people, 10,426 households, and 7,444 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 12,807 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.91% White, 3.69% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,426 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county, the population is spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $27,819, and the median income for a family is $34,157. Males have a median income of $28,357 versus $18,806 for females.
