Governments of Ireland

In 1919 The First D�il elected its first �ireacht or Ministry. Since then Irish governments have been formed under three constitutions, the D�il Constitution (1919-1922), the Irish Free State Constitution Act, 1922 and Bunreacht na h�ireann (1937-present).

The method of government formation differed in each.

In the D�il Constitution, the head of government, the Pr�omh �ire/President of D�il �ireann/President of the Republic was elected by the D�il. He then formed a ministry.
In the Irish Free State constitution, the Governor-General of the Irish Free State appointed the head of government, the President of the Executive Council on the nomination of D�il �ireann (the Chamber of Deputies).
Under Bunreacht na �ireann, the President of Ireland appoints the head of government, the Taoiseach, on the nomination of D�il �ireann (the House of Representatives).
