1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 3,999 people, 1,751 households, and 1,055 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,662.1/km² (6,896.3/mi²). There are 1,840 housing units at an average density of 1,224.9/km² (3,173.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 34.23% White, 62.89% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,751 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.6% are married couples living together, 21.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.95. In the village the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 81.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.4 males. The median income for a household in the village is $37,111, and the median income for a family is $47,328. Males have a median income of $34,444 versus $29,116 for females.
