\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,681 km² (1,035 mi²). 2,110 km² (815 mi²) of it is land and 570 km² (220 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.27% water.


\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 55,797 people, 21,659 households, and 15,854 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (68/mi²). There are 28,282 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (35/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 59.69% White, 38.61% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.81% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 21,659 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.10% are married couples living together, 15.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,312, and the median income for a family is $41,554. Males have a median income of $31,110 versus $20,910 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,805. 17.10% of the population and 13.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.80% are under the age of 18 and 14.00% are 65 or older.
