\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 12,555 km² (4,848 mi²). 12,090 km² (4,668 mi²) of it is land and 465 km² (179 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.70% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 99.14% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 532 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 4.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.93.
