Fletcher is a town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,185.

Geography

Fletcher is located at 35°25'58" North, 82°30'24" West (35.432840, -82.506648)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²). 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,185 people, 1,744 households, and 1,248 families residing in the town. The population density is 305.5/km² (791.1/mi²). There are 1,816 housing units at an average density of 132.5/km² (343.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.60% White, 3.30% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,744 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 35.8% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $45,426, and the median income for a family is $51,688. Males have a median income of $35,976 versus $26,176 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,607. 7.4% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.5% are under the age of 18 and 10.7% are 65 or older.
