Fayette, Iowa

Fayette is a city located in Fayette County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,300. It was named after the Marquis de la Fayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War.


Fayette is located at 42°50'33" North, 91°48'11" West (42.842414, -91.803013)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 1,300 people, 399 households, and 233 families residing in the city. The population density is 336.9/km² (870.9/mi²). There are 446 housing units at an average density of 115.6/km² (298.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.54% White, 5.15% African American, 0.38% Native American, 2.54% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 1.38% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. 3.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 399 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.5% under the age of 18, 37.0% from 18 to 24, 18.6% from 25 to 44, 14.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 124.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 128.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,750, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $19,135 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,131. 16.4% of the population and 13.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.0% are under the age of 18 and 13.8% are 65 or older.
