Farmington is a town located in Franklin County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,098.

Farmington is the county seat of Franklin County, Maine. It is also home to the University of Maine at Farmington.

Geography

\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 4,098 people, 1,568 households, and 625 families residing in the town. The population density is 392.6/km² (1,015.8/mi²). There are 1,668 housing units at an average density of 159.8 persons/km² (413.4 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.88% White, 0.37% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.93% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,568 households out of which 18.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.4% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 60.1% are non-families. 40.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.99 and the average family size is 2.72. In the town the population is spread out with 12.7% under the age of 18, 39.6% from 18 to 24, 17.3% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 69.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 64.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $22,130, and the median income for a family is $31,471. Males have a median income of $31,296 versus $20,385 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,455. 33.4% of the population and 31.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 46.6% are under the age of 18 and 4.6% are 65 or older.
