Exeter is a town located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,759.


\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.74% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 9,759 people, 4,233 households, and 2,539 families residing in the town. The population density is 860.3/km² (2,230.4/mi²). There are 4,376 housing units at an average density of 385.7 persons/km² (1,000.1 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.21% White, 0.46% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,233 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 40.0% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.92. In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.
