Demographics

census of 2000, there are 9,688 people, 3,751 households, and 2,569 families residing in the city. The population density is 446.4/km² (1,155.4/mi²). There are 4,107 housing units at an average density of 189.2/km² (489.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.55% White, 0.58% African American, 2.86% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 25.56% from other races, and 3.25% from two or more races. 84.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,751 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 18.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 26.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,144, and the median income for a family is $32,255. Males have a median income of $25,558 versus $23,177 for females.
