Ellsworth County, Kansas

Ellsworth County is a county located in the U.S. State of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 6,525. The county seat is at Ellsworth.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,874 km² (723 mi²). 1,854 km² (716 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,525 people, 2,481 households, and 1,639 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (9/mi²). There are 3,228 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.67% White, 3.56% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 3.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,481 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.90% are non-families. 31.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 111.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,772, and the median income for a family is $44,360. Males have a median income of $30,110 versus $20,486 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,569. 7.20% of the population and 4.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.50% are under the age of 18 and 11.10% are 65 or older.
