Geography

U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,090 km² (421 mi²). 1,047 km² (404 mi²) of it is land and 43 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.96% water.

Demographics

census2 of 2000, there are 3,754 people, 1,264 households, and 936 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (9/mi²). There are 1,482 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.14% White, 6.93% Black or African American, 1.15% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 13.69% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 19.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,264 households out of which 38.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 18.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.97 and the average family size is 3.26. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 12.50% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
