East Orange is a city located in Essex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 69,824.

census of 2000, there are 69,824 people, 26,024 households, and 16,082 families residing in the city. The population density is 6,859.8/km² (17,776.6/mi²). There are 28,485 housing units at an average density of 2,798.5/km² (7,252.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 3.84% White, 89.46% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.14% from other races, and 3.80% from two or more races. 4.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 26,024 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.0% are married couples living together, 28.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.37. In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,346, and the median income for a family is $38,562. Males have a median income of $31,905 versus $30,268 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,488. 19.2% of the population and 15.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 24.7% are under the age of 18 and 14.0% are 65 or older.
