East Chicago is a city located in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 32,414.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.5 km² (15.6 mi²). 31.0 km² (12.0 mi²) of it is land and 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 23.35% water.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 32,414 people, 11,707 households, and 7,937 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,044.7/km² (2,706.3/mi²). There are 13,261 housing units at an average density of 427.4/km² (1,107.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 36.54% White, 36.08% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 23.98% from other races, and 2.60% from two or more races. 51.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 11,707 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.8% are married couples living together, 26.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.41. In the city the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,538, and the median income for a family is $31,778. Males have a median income of $32,588 versus $21,678 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,517. 24.4% of the population and 22.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 33.3% are under the age of 18 and 15.6% are 65 or older.
