East Aurora is a village located in Erie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,673.

East Aurora is located at 42°46'1" North, 78°37'2" West (42.766809, -78.617121)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 6,673 people, 2,596 households, and 1,728 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,026.5/km² (2,653.8/mi²). There are 2,729 housing units at an average density of 419.8/km² (1,085.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.80% White, 0.19% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,596 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $49,028, and the median income for a family is $59,250. Males have a median income of $42,969 versus $32,111 for females. The per capita income for the village is $22,753. 3.7% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.1% are under the age of 18 and 4.4% are 65 or older.

Interesting Facts

Former President of the United States Millard Fillmore lived in East Aurora with his wife, Abigail from 1826-1830. Their house is currently maintained by the Aurora Historical Society.

The founder of the Roycroft movement, Elbert Hubbard, also lived there during the turn of the nineteenth century. The Roycroft Inn was granted National Landmark Status in 1986 and re-opened in June 1995 through the support of the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation.
