Dyfed

Dyfed was one of the ancient kingdoms (or principalities) of Wales prior to the Norman Conquest.

During local government reorganisation in 1974, the newly-created administrative county covering Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire was given the name Dyfed. However, further reorganisation of local government during the 1990s, involving the creation of unitary authorities resulted in a return to the status quo, and Dyfed was dissolved into its original component counties.

The name survives in that of institutions such as Dyfed-Powys Police.

The name Dyfed is also a Welsh (man's) forename.
