census of 2000, there are 1,996 people, 834 households, and 503 families residing in the town. The population density is 631.7/km² (1,639.8/mi²). There are 892 housing units at an average density of 282.3/km² (732.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.79% White, 2.40% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 4.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 834 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 3.02. In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.3 males.
