DMX (lighting)

DMX is a serial protocol, also known as DMX512, used for control of theatrical and/or stage lighting. It is composed of 512 channels, known as a universe, and each channel is used to control one aspect of a fixture, such as a dimmer for generic lights, or an aspect of a moving light (e.g. colour, gobo, pitch, yaw). DMX controllers allow assignment and grouping of channels, even in an overlapping manner, so that different lighting scenes can be created easily. Macros make the job even easier, by partly automating multiple series of changes, based upon programming for the needs of each occasion or particular production. DMX may also be used to synchronise lighting with MIDI-controlled music. Standards are set by ESTA, the Entertainment Services & Technology Association.
