Descent with modification

Descent with modification is the cornerstone of biological evolution, the theory that all living things are modified descendants of a common ancestor that lived in the distant past.

In the controversy over evolution and creationism, both sides agree that descent with modification occurs in the course of ordinary biological reproduction. The key question for creationists, according to Jonathan Wells, is whether descent with modification accounts for the origin of new species--in fact, of every species.
