Deception Pass

Deception Pass is a narrow pass separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island, in the northwest corner of Washington State.

In 1792, Captain George Vancouver sent First Mate Joseph Whidbey to get fresh water from what appeared to be a stream that had been sighted. Since it was not a stream, but a pass to Puget Sound, the water was not fresh. Deceived by the nature of the pass, Vancouver named it Deception Pass.

The pass is bridged by Deception Pass Bridge and is surrounded by a state park.
