census of 2000, there are 9,808 people, 3,819 households, and 2,616 families residing in the city. The population density is 446.0/km² (1,155.4/mi²). There are 4,454 housing units at an average density of 202.6/km² (524.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 60.81% White, 34.73% African American, 0.57% Native American, 1.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 2.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,819 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 16.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
