census of 2000, there are 1,468 people, 861 households, and 519 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,318.1/km² (3,438.9/mi²). There are 973 housing units at an average density of 873.7/km² (2,279.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.30% White, 1.16% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.14% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 861 households out of which 1.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 2.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 32.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.70 and the average family size is 2.11.
