Cumberland County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 146,438. Its county seat is Bridgeton6.

This county is part of the Delaware Valley area.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,752 km² (677 mi²). 1,267 km² (489 mi²) of it is land and 485 km² (187 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 27.68% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 146,438 people, 49,143 households, and 35,186 families residing in the county. The population density is 116/km² (299/mi²). There are 52,863 housing units at an average density of 42/km² (108/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.88% White, 20.20% Black or African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 9.08% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. 19.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 49,143 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.70% are married couples living together, 17.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.19. In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 104.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,150, and the median income for a family is $45,403. Males have a median income of $35,387 versus $25,393 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,376. 15.00% of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.10% are under the age of 18 and 12.90% are 65 or older.
