Cumberland, Maryland

Cumberland is a city located in Allegany County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,518. It is the county seat of Allegany County6.


Cumberland is located at 39°38'52" North, 78°45'46" West (39.647687, -78.762869)1. Interstate 70 runs through the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.5 km² (9.1 mi²). 23.5 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.11% is water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 21,518 people, 9,538 households, and 5,436 families residing in the city. The population density is 916.0/km² (2,372.7/mi²). There are 11,143 housing units at an average density of 474.3/km² (1,228.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.54% White, 5.06% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,538 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.7% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.0% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,142, and the median income for a family is $34,500. Males have a median income of $29,484 versus $20,004 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,813. 19.8% of the population and 15.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.4% are under the age of 18 and 10.3% are 65 or older.
