According to the United States Census Bureau, the Cross Lanes CDP has a total area of 16.9 km² (6.5 mi²). 16.8 km² (6.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.46% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,353 people, 4,231 households, and 2,991 families residing in Cross Lanes. The population density is 615.9/km² (1,594.4/mi²). There are 4,481 housing units at an average density of 266.6/km² (690.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.63% White, 3.84% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.24% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,231 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.92.

The age distribution of the CDP is: 24.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.
