Coquihalla Highway

The Coquihalla Highway (British Columbia Provincial Highway 5) is a four to six-lane freeway that runs through the Coast Mountains of British Columbia from Hope, British Columbia, to Kamloops, British Columbia, over the Coquihalla Pass. It is approximately 156km long. The road is often closed to to heavy snow in winter. It opened in 1986. A $10 (Canadian Dollars) toll is charged on the road.

In 2003, Premier Gordon Campbell announced that his government was going to turn over the operation and maintenance of the road, as well as the toll revenue to a private operator. The public and numerous buisinesses in the interior of British Columbia were enraged over this, so the plan was shelved three months after it was announced, due to the intense public opposition.
