Clay County, South Dakota

\nClay County is a county located in the U.S. State of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 13,537. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. Its county seat is Vermillion6.

Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,079 km² (417 mi²). 1,066 km² (412 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.22% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 13,537 people, 4,878 households, and 2,721 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (33/mi²). There are 5,438 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.78% White, 1.00% Black or African American, 2.66% Native American, 1.95% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,878 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.00% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.20% are non-families. 31.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.93. In the county, the population is spread out with 18.80% under the age of 18, 31.50% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 15.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
