Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 651 km² (251 mi²). 644 km² (249 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 14,882 people, 2,932 households, and 2,624 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (60/mi²). There are 3,316 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 58.08% White, 29.92% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 1.80% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, 5.18% from other races, and 3.77% from two or more races. 10.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,932 households out of which 64.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.30% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 10.50% are non-families. 8.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.41 and the average family size is 3.64. In the county the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 27.90% from 18 to 24, 36.40% from 25 to 44, 5.50% from 45 to 64, and 1.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 171.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 217.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $37,106, and the median income for a family is $38,313. Males have a median income of $21,975 versus $20,648 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,049. 10.60% of the population and 8.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.50% are under the age of 18 and 18.60% are 65 or older.
