Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Basilica, Newark

Cathredral of the Sacred Heart is the seat of the archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. Located at 89 Ridge Street, Newark, New Jersey, next to Branch Brook Park.

Envisioned as a "fitting monument to the faith," the Cathedral was begun in 1899 and finished in 1954. The original desigsn were for an English-Irish gothic church, but plans were later modified in favor qualities one associates with French gothic, such as elaborate rose windows, more scupture by the doorways, and shorter towers. Sacred Heart is the fifth largest cathedral in the United States and is worth visiting.
