census2 of 2000, there are 54,011 people, 22,066 households, and 14,718 families residing in the town. The population density is 921.5/km² (2,386.7/mi²). There are 23,655 housing units at an average density of 403.6/km² (1,045.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 88.67% White, 1.65% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 4.47% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 13.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 22,066 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 26.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93. In the town the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.
