Carbondale is a town located in Garfield County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,196.

Geography

Carbondale is located at 39°23'58" North, 107°12'53" West (39.399352, -107.214820)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,196 people, 1,744 households, and 1,168 families residing in the town. The population density is 998.1/km² (2,583.8/mi²). There are 1,821 housing units at an average density of 349.8/km² (905.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.28% White, 0.65% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 11.80% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. 32.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,744 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.32.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 37.4% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 110.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $52,429, and the median income for a family is $55,726. Males have a median income of $33,025 versus $24,786 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,383. 12.2% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.0% are under the age of 18 and 5.0% are 65 or older.

Culture

Carbondale in best known by affectionatly locals as a hippie haven. Festivals such as Mountain Fair celebrate the town flower, the dandelion. Non-profit groups such as the Stepstone Center advocate radical socialism and help bring in more immigrants into the area. However, a small minority contest the liberal stranglehold on local thinking, Ryan C. Gilman is one notable person leading the charge. With his initiative to create an alternative to Mountain Fair called, "Enjoy Capitalism" which was founded in 2003 with a total of 10 people showing up to disscus Capitalism.
