Burleson, Texas

Burleson is a city located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,976.

Burleson is the hometown of singer and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.

Geography

Burleson is located at 32°32'9" North, 97°19'38" West (32.535939, -97.327257)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 51.0 km² (19.7 mi²). 50.9 km² (19.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,976 people, 7,610 households, and 5,981 families residing in the city. The population density is 412.2/km² (1,067.7/mi²). There are 7,794 housing units at an average density of 153.1/km² (396.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.62% White, 0.40% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 5.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,610 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.0% are married couples living together, 11.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $50,432, and the median income for a family is $56,031. Males have a median income of $40,567 versus $27,032 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,175. 6.0% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.5% are under the age of 18 and 9.6% are 65 or older.
