Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,262 km² (487 mi²). 1,219 km² (471 mi²) of it is land and 44 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.45% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 2,032 people, 526 households, and 421 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 602 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 16.34% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 81.59% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 526 households out of which 47.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.60% are married couples living together, 31.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.80% are non-families. 16.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.83 and the average family size is 4.23. In the county, the population is spread out with 41.30% under the age of 18, 11.00% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 16.10% from 45 to 64, and 6.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 105.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.
