Brownsville is a borough located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,804.

Geography

Brownsville is located at 40°1'12" North, 79°53'22" West (40.020026, -79.889536)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.91% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,804 people, 1,238 households, and 716 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,082.6/km² (2,796.6/mi²). There are 1,550 housing units at an average density of 598.5/km² (1,545.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 85.95% White, 11.41% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 2.25% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,238 households out of which 24.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% are married couples living together, 17.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 38.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the borough the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 83.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $18,559, and the median income for a family is $32,662. Males have a median income of $31,591 versus $21,830 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $13,404. 34.3% of the population and 28.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 51.2% are under the age of 18 and 17.9% are 65 or older.
