Bishop, California

Bishop is a city located in Inyo County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,575.

Bishop was the home of Galen and Barbara Rowell before their untimely death at the Bishop Airport.

Geography

Bishop is located at 37°21'54" North, 118°23'42" West (37.365087, -118.394896)1.

Bishop lies at the northern end of the Owens Valley. US Highway 395 runs through the town. The Paiute tribe controls land just north of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,575 people, 1,684 households, and 831 families residing in the city. The population density is 788.8/km² (2,042.5/mi²). There are 1,867 housing units at an average density of 411.9/km² (1,066.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.62% White, 0.20% African American, 2.04% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.49% from other races, and 5.37% from two or more races. 17.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,684 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.5% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.6% are non-families. 44.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,338, and the median income for a family is $34,423. Males have a median income of $23,433 versus $24,545 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,660. 16.3% of the population and 14.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.0% are under the age of 18 and 6.0% are 65 or older.
