Geography\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²). 11.0 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.42% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census of 2000, there are 10,849 people, 3,388 households, and 1,473 families residing in the city. The population density is 985.6/km² (2,555.5/mi²). There are 3,654 housing units at an average density of 332.0/km² (860.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.57% White, 10.63% African American, 0.73% Native American, 2.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,388 households out of which 25.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.5% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 56.5% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the city the population is spread out with 15.2% under the age of 18, 51.0% from 18 to 24, 17.3% from 25 to 44, 9.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 109.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $20,192, and the median income for a family is $28,629. Males have a median income of $30,341 versus $19,770 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,719. 35.0% of the population and 19.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 29.3% are under the age of 18 and 11.6% are 65 or older.
