Big Pine Key, Florida

Big Pine Key is a town located in Monroe County, Florida on an island of the same name in the Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,032.

Geography

Big Pine Key is located at 24°41'10" North, 81°21'40" West (24.686170, -81.360988)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.8 km² (9.9 mi²). 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,032 people, 2,247 households, and 1,420 families residing in the town. The population density is 198.9/km² (515.3/mi²). There are 3,153 housing units at an average density of 124.6/km² (322.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.83% White, 1.09% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 6.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,247 households out of which 21.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.63.

In the town the population is spread out with 16.8% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 33.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 110.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,514, and the median income for a family is $47,639. Males have a median income of $31,552 versus $28,021 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,169. 9.5% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.4% are under the age of 18 and 7.0% are 65 or older.
