Bernard of Chartres

Bernard of Chartres (Bernardus Carnotensis), 12th century scholar and administrator. His date of birth is unknown, although it is believed he is of Breton origin. He died in approximately 1130 and is thought to be the elder brother of Thierry of Chartres.

Bernard is recorded at the cathedral school of Chartres before 1117 and was chancellor until 1124.

Most of what we know about his work is through the writings of John of Salisbury and William of Conches, though a commentary on Plato has been attributed to him.
