Bellefonte is a borough located in Centre County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 6,395. It is the county seat of Centre County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 6,395 people, 2,796 households, and 1,602 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,356.7/km² (3,510.1/mi²). There are 2,953 housing units at an average density of 626.5/km² (1,620.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.25% White, 0.91% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,796 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.84. In the borough the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.9 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $33,216, and the median income for a family is $42,378. Males have a median income of $31,221 versus $23,442 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,659. 13.5% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.5% are under the age of 18 and 6.8% are 65 or older.
