Belhaven is a town located in Beaufort County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,968.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 1,968 people, 827 households, and 530 families residing in the town. The population density is 506.6/km² (1,313.4/mi²). There are 1,015 housing units at an average density of 261.3/km² (677.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 37.30% White, 60.67% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 2.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 827 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.6% are married couples living together, 22.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $16,674, and the median income for a family is $23,958. Males have a median income of $23,839 versus $16,741 for females.
