Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,992 km² (769 mi²). 1,954 km² (754 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 60,371 people, 23,838 households, and 18,164 families residing in the county. The population density is 31/km² (80/mi²). There are 26,841 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.18% White, 6.24% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 23,838 households out of which 32.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.40% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.80% are non-families. 20.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.89. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $43,136, and the median income for a family is $49,303. Males have a median income of $35,117 versus $23,906 for females. Out of the total people living in poverty, 8.30% are under the age of 18 and 10.50% are 65 or older.
