Demographics

census of 2000, there are 4,602 people, 1,860 households, and 1,246 families residing in the city. The population density is 567.7/km² (1,469.1/mi²). There are 2,106 housing units at an average density of 259.8/km² (672.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.03% White, 0.98% African American, 5.04% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 5.11% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,860 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.02. In the city the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $28,768, and the median income for a family is $33,933. Males have a median income of $27,005 versus $19,038 for females.
