Bardstown is a city located in Nelson County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,374. It is the county seat of Nelson County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.7 km² (7.2 mi²). 18.6 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.69% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 10,374 people, 4,195 households, and 2,701 families residing in the city. The population density is 557.9/km² (1,445.3/mi²). There are 4,488 housing units at an average density of 241.3/km² (625.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.11% White, 15.07% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,195 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.7% are married couples living together, 17.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 31.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.00. In the city the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,497, and the median income for a family is $41,065. Males have a median income of $31,850 versus $20,537 for females.
